20, 30, 40, 50… HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN EVERY STEP OF THE WAY

20, 30, 40, 50… HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN EVERY STEP OF THE WAY

Taking care of our skin health is important at any age. But our skin is constantly changing, especially women, because they are subject to more hormonal changes than men, and that's why it's essential to have specific care for each stage of life.

Although that are some precautions that are crucial at any time: proper cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection, each type of damage and age range needs specific care. The skin’s needs are different at 20 or at 60 years old. While we complain about excessive pimples and dark circles in adolescence, the problems turn to be lack of hydration and fine lines with the arrival of the 30s.

It's no use for a 30-year-old woman to use a 60-year-old’s cream to take advantage of the anti-aging technology. For example, a very concentrated cream for someone who is 60 is very greasy for someone who is 20 and can trigger acne. Products are formulated specifically for each age group and the incorrect use might cause more harm than good.

With that in mind, I put together a basic face care guide for each age group - 20, 30, 40 and 50 years onwards to help to guide you on the search for the best products.

At 20: Prevention is key

At age 20, the skin is at its peak of collagen production and other essential substances for its elasticity and hydration, so it does not demand too many tricks and products to maintain a youthful and glowing look. But, because of hormonal changes, the excess oiliness, enlarged pores, and acne are common complaints.

The daily plan of attack for healthy skin at this age is to wash your face twice a day using astringent soaps formulated with ingredients like witch hazel, calendula, or chamomile, that purify and refresh the skin. Invest in oil-free moisturizers and products with salicylic acid that gently exfoliate the surface of the skin, avoiding the pores to clog.

This is also the time to start taking precautions with premature aging of the skin. Sun protection, gentle cleansing, and hydration with non-aggressive and alcohol-free products are the most important steps. And ALWAYS taking off your makeup before going to sleep (can’t emphasize enough how much this will make a difference in the future!).

At 30: The First Signs of Aging Appear

In our 30's, we can already see the first signs of aging: change in skin's hydration level; the decrease of collagen and elastin production, and the appearance of the first wrinkles around the eyes.

Cleansing the skin remains essential, but now, it's time to leave the very astringent products aside to include more moisturizing formulas. Milk cleansers are great because they remove impurities without drying out the skin. The hydration should extend to the neckline.

Good sun protection and moisturizing prevent superficial marks and keep the skin youthful and glowing. It's time to start using specific anti-aging creams to nourish the skin. Invest in products that renew the cells and stimulate collagen production. Some sun spots and acne scars might also appear on the face, which can be treated with laser or peeling.

At 40: Recover Your Skin Smoothness

With the approach of menopause, many changes occur in the skin: the cells turnover slows down, the levels of estrogen and testosterone fall significantly, and the skin becomes dehydrated and tired-looking, losing its vitality and elasticity.

At this time, cleansing should be done with less aggressive items, in order to maintain skin's hydration at a maximum level. With lines, wrinkles, and blemishes becoming more evident, it is in the skins best interest to add the application of filling creams. Invest in antioxidants and acids to promote the skin's restoration and nutrition. As in other phases, sun protection is indispensable.

To facilitate cell renewal, it is also worth investing in weekly scrubs that leave the skin soft, lighted and free of dead cells. This is also the right time to do facial massages, which help increase circulation, reduce swelling and stimulate the lymphatic system.

At 50 and Beyond: Tightening and Lifting

When we get older, the skin damages caused by the sun, pollution and bad habits are most evident by the cumulative process. Hormone levels decrease even more, and the skin becomes fragile and dry. The hormonal fluctuations of menopause are accompanied by skin dehydration, hyperpigmentation, sensitivities, and reduced elasticity. At this stage, in addition to the previous care, it is important to use moisturizers rich in lipids and specific for mature skin. You will also need to increase sun protection by using a product with a higher SPF. Choose creams with vitamins A, C, and E, which improve hydration, and actives like Ribose and citric acid, that aid skin cell regeneration. The eye cream should contain ingredients such as collagen and polyphenols.Moisturizers should be in cream or creamy lotion, preferably associated with substances that address the main needs, such as antioxidants and tightening and lifting agents.
